I renovated our bathroom and somehow ended up with worse lighting than before. Here's what I missed, and the fix that actually worked.

Kitchen pendant lights look simple until you're standing in front of one that's the wrong size or hanging at the wrong height.
The question isn't which one is better. It's which one to prioritize when you can only change one thing.
Count the holes before you open the catalog. Three faucets, two returns, one that's been there four years, and everything the spec sheet should have told me first.
Four years of 1990s polished-gold lanterns nobody saw until a phone photo at dusk. Two black fixtures at the front door, two brass at the back, one afternoon, under $300, and the house looked decided.
A lamp, three books, two cables, hand lotion, a remote from another room and a coaster from the kitchen. The rule that fixed it, and the sconce that took the biggest thing off the surface.
Two people said I'd regret the water spots and my husband voted nickel. Fourteen months: a wipe every couple of days, no chips on the PVD, and he conceded at month three.
One medicine cabinet, one drawer, one cabinet under the sink, then a child. Three cabinets with doors and matching hardware, and the counter has stayed clear for a year.
Four pothos, a snake plant and a monstera, and no cohesion. Sheers, oak, a rattan pendant, a river stone and warm bulbs, about $860, and a 1964 ranch that finally connects to the maple outside.
A 520-square-foot Stockholm apartment felt bigger than our 1,400-square-foot ranch, and the difference was five warm lights at three heights and no ceiling fixture on. Here's the formula and what it cost to copy.
Removing the uppers on one wall cost $400 and opened the kitchen the same afternoon. The honest part: 30 percent of the time the shelves look like a garage. Here's the rule that got it to 70.
Open shelves and a frameless mirror looked better in photos and worse on a Tuesday. A 16 by 26 recessed cabinet with a thin black frame closed the storage loop, and the counter has been clear for two years.
I bought stools twice and returned them twice for the same mistake: measuring the counter top instead of the underside. Floor to underside, minus 10 to 12 inches, is the seat height. Everything else follows.
A marble table with no storage, covered in remotes, chargers and blankets for three years. An oak table with two drawers and a shelf, and the surface has stayed clear for eight months because everything has a home.
A 14-foot hallway with a smoke detector and nothing else. Two sconces, $150, two screws each, and the battery numbers the box doesn't give you.
Form follows function, and for two months our living room followed it straight into a dentist's waiting area. The principles, the anchor piece, the light and the texture that fixed it.
The character ceiling light was $40 less and would have been replaced at seven. The plain one on a dimmer will last until she picks her own at fifteen. Three settings, one fixture, and a clip-on she controls.
I have brass on the front porch and black on the back. Here's the honest two-year comparison.
Sixty objects boxed in January, ten left out, six came back. The rooms looked larger, cleaning halved, and the vase nobody had noticed became the fireplace's object.
Eighteen-inch nightstands and a lamp base I knocked every night reaching for the phone. Plug-in sconces, an hour for both sides, ten months: sconces win for most bedrooms, and here's when they don't.
Bought before measuring the drain, standard depth in a 5-foot room, finish before fixtures, a linen tower that blocked the door, doors instead of drawers. Five mistakes, about $500 of fees and fixes, one card.
A $45 lighthouse from a street fair, still on the wall twelve years later. The folder method, the spending rule, the hanging height, and the light that makes cheap art look considered.
I bought expensive sheets and the bed still didn't look like a hotel's. The linens were a red herring; the formula and the technique are free, and the throw fold takes fifteen seconds.
The entryway is the first impression of your whole home. Here's how to light it properly.
You don't need a $3,000 sofa to achieve Scandinavian-style interiors. Here's where the money actually matters.
Most sconces are hung too high because that's where the ladder puts you. The heights by room, the spacing, the corner rule I got wrong twice, and the $3 method that stopped me patching holes.
Checkerboard samples on the floor for a week and a nine-year-old asking about a milkshake machine. The proportion, the materials, the light, and the wood that keep black and white from going cold.
Bare bulb, builder white, wire shelving from 1987, a floor drain I ignored for four years. Three weekends and $1,280 later it's where I go to listen to podcasts.
Wet plaster behind the tile, a vanity ordered after demolition, sconces discontinued between order and install. The full accounting, and the 20 percent line nobody's allowed to touch.
